Ship operators’ claims of non-availability of marine fuel compliant with low-sulphur regulations have dropped as their validity has come under increased scrutiny, a pattern expected to repeat as global fuel standards take force. When the marine fuel sulphur limit in the US was capped at 0.1pc from 1pc in 2015, the US Coast Guard saw a slew of ship operators submitting so-called Fonar reports as an excuse to use higher-sulphur fuel, Jefrey Lantz, director of commercial regulations and standards for the US Coast Guard, said at the ShippingInsight’s Fleet Optimization & Innovation conference in Stamford, Connecticut.
