Century pivots to P1020 from value add Al

Chicago-headquartered smelter Century Aluminum has joined its competitor Alcoa in converting some of its sales mix back to “standard products” such as P1020 rather than billet or foundry alloys, in the face of a Covid-19-related demand crunch. For the past few years, smelters such as Alcoa, Century, Alba and Rusal have followed a strategy of moving away from commodity-grade P1020 and into more diferentiated products such as extrusion billet, which fetch higher premiums.
