The height adjustable add-on element for a piece of sitting or lying furniture (2) has on the underside a scissor mechanism by which the add-on element can be brought into a lower stowed position or an extended position. The upper end of one member (6) of the scissor mechanism is fastened to a pivot mounting (8) on or in the add-on element, and the upper end of the other member (7) is guided by a protruding spigot (9), or roller (10) rotatable on it, in a straight or curved slot (11) in the add-on element.
