Cumulative attack envelopes: An evaluation tool for transient system behaviour in electroacoustics

In the past an attempt has been made for the output signal instantaneous amplitude for linear and time invariant systems stimulated by sudden sinusoids, to be provided by means of a cumulative 3D waterfall, orginally named Cumulative Attack Spectra. It is shown that the sort of signal envelope provided by such plots, becomes very approximate at frequencies for which significant attenuation is introduced by the device under evaluation. A revision, closely related to the original envelope concept of Dugundji. is proposed, therefore called Cumulative Attack Envelopes. This time-frequency presentation of a system's transient behaviour is applied to electroacoustics and shown to resolve several aspects of the system structure, which are possibly compatible with subjectively assessed healing impressions.
