Properties of Ni-Co Alloy Coating Prepared by Pulsed and Pulsed Reverse Current

The nickel-cobalt (Ni-Co) alloy coatings were prepared on the type 316L stainless steel substrates by pulsed current and pulsed reverse current electroplating methods. The surface morphology, microstructure, composition and roughness of the coatings were observed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and three-dimensional white light interference profilometer. The different Co content of the Ni-Co coatings is due to the different pulse frequencies and current densities. The smoother morphology can be obtained at higher pulse frequency or lower current density. The results showed that under the same experimental parameters the pulsed reverse current coatings exhibited smoother surface, smaller grain size and lower roughness compared with that of the pulsed current coatings. The roughness of coating is affected by the thickness of the coating and current density.
