Hydroxyapatite/Diopside Porous Scaffolds: Preparation and In Vitro Study

In the present study, diopside (CaMgSi2O6) powder was prepared and used to investigate the preparation and characterization of highly porous 3D hydroxyapatite scaffolds, coated with diopside (CaMgSi2O6) (DP/HA) composites. Diopside preparation included two steps: the first step was the preparation of nanosized diopside (CaMgSi2O6) powder via the sol–gel technique. The second step was the formation of hydroxyapatite scaffolds coated with diopside using the impregnation method. The results indicated that the prepared diopside powder was composed of pure nanodiopside (CaMgSi2O6), with particle sizes ranging between 22–38 nm. The coated scaffolds, which were calcined at 950 °C for 2 h, were highly porous (72±0.5 %). The scaffolds had crushing and bending strengths of 0.63±0.001 MPa and 1.90±0.039 MPa, respectively, which is in agreement with the standard compressive strength of spongy bone (0.2–4 MPa).
