COURSE CURRICULUM IN GEOLOGY AND QUALITY OF GEOSCIENCE EDUCATION IN INDIA

Geology course curriculum at Indian universities in is guided by an overarching white paper released by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2001. The UGC model curriculum in Earth Sciences (2001) emphasized on the autonomy of the academic institutions to frame curriculum according to specific needs, and underlined that the recommendations are made in a spirit of openness and continuous improvement. It was made amply clear that "to meet the need and requirements of the society and in order to enhance the standard and quality of education, updating and restructuring of the curriculum must continue as a perpetual process." Till date, the basic framework in Earth Science education in India consists of a 3-year undergraduate programme where the first year covers introduction to all branches of geology, and the remaining two years of a B.Sc (Hons.) course is supposed to cover subjects at a higher academic level.
