The argument for increasing automation of the driving task is often accompanied by the argument that the human driver as the root cause of accidents could be eliminated. However this argumentation ignores that accidents are rare and multi-causal events. The human driver is thus not the only cause, but in many cases, the very last and important safety component in the system. Therefore an objective consideration of error distributions and the statistical relationships of accident causation is necessary.
