Japan prepares for new IMO 2020 sulphur rules

Japanese ship operators are calling on the country's oil refiners to meet fuel quality and compatibility requirements when supplying ultra-low sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) that complies with stricter global sulphur caps from 2020. Japan's economy, trade and industry ministry (Meti) and transport ministry have launched a roundtable discussion between refiners and ship operators in preparation for the introduction of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) 0.5pc sulphur cap on marine fuels in January 2020.
