The aim of the study was to investigate possible correlations between functional foods consumption with anthropometric parameters and body composition. 301 healthy adults aged between 18-65 years old 181 women and 120 men from various Greek areas participated in this study. The participants completed a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) regarding functional food consumption, and anthropometric measurements carried out. Statistical analysis was performed by using One-way ANOVA analysis and Bonferoni test. Daily consumption of fiber-rich foods was correlated with reduced Body Mass Index (BMI), body fat and waist-to-hip ratio, compared to rare consumption (p=0.01, 0.018, 0.013). Low fat foods had a negative correlation with body fat (p=0.006) and body water (p =0.008). The participants who often consumed gojiberry, cranberry and pomegranate had reduced BMI, compared to those who had never consumed these functional foods (p0.005). Daily oats consumption was correlated with reduced body fat (p=0.005) and increased body water (p=0.004), while cocoa showed a negative correlation with BMI (p =0.013) and positive correlation with body water (p=0.012). Although some foods studied were correlated with specific anthropometric indicators related to weight control, more studies are needed so as to evaluate the potential impact of specific bioactive compounds consumption on body mass composition.
