Corporate Social Responsibility Based on Tri Hita Karana: The Implementation in the Hotel Industry

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has received enormous concern from the hotel industry due to increasing awareness of hotel management regarding its importance. CSR is believed as a way in which a hotel is able to sustain its existence. Numbers of empirical studies had been conducted;however, only a few of it study the relationship of CSR and culture. Tri Hita Karana is part of Balinese culture as a way of life which includes the relationship between human with God (parahyangan), human with human (pawongan), and human with the environment (palemahan). The purpose of thisstudy is to examine the reasons of a hotel to implement CSR based on Tri Hita Karana. Qualitative and quantitative research had been conducted with the purpose of validity and reliability. The first stage of the study was a qualitative research utilizing case study method. The findings revealthat the reasons for implementing CSR based on Tri Hita Karana are CSR as philanthropy, CSR as risk management, and CSR as value creation. The second stage was a quantitative research applying a Confirmatory Factor Analysis to ensure the factors revealed in the first stage of the researchare valid. The findings confirm that the three factors are valid. The conclusion of this paper is that the CSR based on Tri Hita Karana is applied by hotels in Bali with different scale and size depends on their target market and policy. The recommendation for further research is to analyzethe financial benefit for applying CSR based on the Tri Hita Karana philosophy.
