Adult Learning Through Homestay Program: A Case Study at Tanjung Piai, Pontian, Johor, Malaysia

Adult learning activities have been undertaken by adults after the break since leaving initial education and training, which resulted in the acquisition of new knowledge and skills’. Typically, the input obtained from the learning process is something that is relevant in performingtheir work. In ensuring that the development of homestay programs remain in line with the goals set by the MOTAC, the capabilities of homestay operators should be emphasised and always kept at a satisfactory level. Thus, this study was meant to explore the process of adult learning in buildingtheir knowledge and skills, as well as the attitude of the rural community that enables them to be involved well in tourism planning. A total of 7 key informants were selected using purposeful sampling techniques based on their experiences in managing a homestay program. This study appliesa qualitative approach by conducting an in-depth interview with key informants. All the data were analysed using thematic analysis. A community-based tourism program at a Tanjung Piai homestay located at Pontian, Johor, Malaysia is chosen to illustrate the contextual setting of the discussionsand debates for adult learning on improving knowledge and skills. The findings show that there is a learning process that occurs among homestay operators to enhance their competence. Based on the findings, Informal Learning is the primary learning process of homestay operators in developinghomestay to support formal learning.
