Rapid Generation of DNA Probes by Amplification of Tandem Repeats

Repeated regions are frequent in ge-nomic DNA but rare in translated regions. One of the exceptions to this rule is genes of mucins, large glycoproteins with a characteristic central part containing tandem repeats of different lengths (7-169 aa in different mucins). Mucins have a tissue-specific expression that alters after malignant transformation. The complete sequences of three mucin genes (MUC1, MUC2 and MUC7) out of eight identified so far have been published. Of the remaining mucins, only cloned parts of the genes, including the repeated region, are known.
