The cytological, morphological and histochemical features of the development of anthers and microsporogenesis of allocytoplasmically male sterile Chinese cabbage [B. pekinensis] line CMS3411-7, derived from a male-sterile line of rape (B. napus), were compared with those of the maintainer 3411-7. Anther development of CMS3411-7 was mainly abnormal at the archesporial cell. There was no differentiation of archesporial cells and microspores, but vascular bundles in the anthers developed normally. Atthe end of the flowering period, after sudden environmental changes, about 1-5% of CMS3411-7 anthers produced pollen. This pollen was compared with pollen from 3411-7 by electron microscopy. They were different in appearance and construction, and CMS3411-7 pollen was non-viable.
