She points out that the practice is unregulated and is being actively encouraged by the Environment Agency.However planning permission may be required for tanks, lagoons and pump sheds, she warns. Water for use in wash-downs on dairy farms may remain untreated. But if it is to be used for to clean hands, udders or dairy plant machinery, it must come from a 'potable' source by law. It may be more practical to reserve rainwater for washing down and use mains water for other purposes, said Dr Stafford.
