COMMUNITY AS A BASIS FOR THE RENEWAL OF LANDSCAPE

With this lecture we now come to the conclusion of our confcrene. At this point it behooves us to once more pay tribute to Karl Konig as the founder of Camphill, of the village impulse, and of this village. In this regard we should take particular note of the statements he made to the farmers and gardeners at Brachenreuthe on September 4,1964. That address, given nine years after die birth of Botton Village, is perhaps the most important example showing how two impulses can become parents to new life initiatives through working with the dynamics of anthro-posophy and the social/therapeutic work of healing. It is the reason why our focus on the parallels in the dynamics of plant growth and social growth was chosen as the theme for this conference. The caduceus, the staff of Mercury, is the symbol of healers, of doctors and therapists, and therefore a symbol for the ever-recurring mystery of dying and becoming, of death and resurrection. It stands for something which none of us can accomplish alone but only with others, and it inspires us with the impulse to bring help to the needs of the world. Our aim is always to work in such a way that every step we take may help the world to a higher level. The symbol of the caduceus expresses the dynamics of the art of healing and it has stood as the motto for our efforts over the days of this conference. On each day we allowed one aspect of the interaction or merging of motives to stand before our mind's eye, letting one specific mode of activity stand before us each day.
