The following is an edited version of the transcript of a talk given at the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association Conference held in Eugene, Oregon on November 8-10, 2002. Questions and comments from the audience are printed in boldface italic. Welcome. We won't worry about introductions. That would take too much rime, so I'll start right in. In Germany, I was a teacher for twenty-three years at two Waldorf schools. I taught first at the original Waldorf school, founded in 1919, and later ata second one not far away. For most of that time I was a gardening teacher. I feel I was blessed twice, because a garden is always different every year, in every season, and because the children are different every year as well. I had a double dose of variety and metamorphosis and change. One has to be a good sanguine to be able to handle that, although phlegmatics are sometimes good at too. Although I am not one, would have to say that phlegmatics make the best teachers. The longer I was involved withWaldorf education and working as a gardening teacher, the more I realized how important that subject is and how important it is to team up with the farms. Children need this type of experience more than ever before. This is a tremendous opportunity. Asthe quality of our public education system declines, I think Waldorf education will have more and more of a chance to come into its own.
