Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on local oil demand, Japan's crude imports in May averaged 2.3MM b/d, down 15% month-on-month and 25% year-on-year to the lowest level in 53 years, according to data from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). During May, throughput at Japanese refineries fell by 27% year-on-year to 1.9MM b/d.
