The Railway Man, Eric Lomax's lacerating memoir of life as a Japanese prisoner-of-war (POW) and eventual reconciliation with one of his torturers, caused a stir when it was published in 1995- Interest in a feature film of the story started soon after, encouraged by Lomax. But only now has it reached the big screen, with a seriously convincing Colin Firth playing an older Lomax reliving his wartime self as a junior signals officer in southeast Asia. With the recent death of Nelson Mandela, and the looming centenary of the outbreak of World War 1, this film should find a ready audience. Sadly the man who inspired it died in 2012, aged 93, without seeing the film.
