This article provides fascinating insight into the variety of ways accountable care organizations can be structured and leveraged to provide health care to large populations of patients. As I read this article, I was struck by 2 important issues, 1 explicitly stated and the other implied. The article specifically addresses the fact that none of the 4 groups had formed a multi-payer ACO. One wonders if the terms worked out with 1 insurance company will be acceptable to other companies and whether ACOs can maintain fiscal viability if there is significant variability between pavers. This issue will work itself out in time.
