Germany’s Coal Importers Association strongly opposed the political agreement reached this week on the phase-out of lignite- and coal-fired power generation, saying the deal was “discriminatory and contestable”. The German government on Thursday agreed to a EUR4.0 billion ($4.4 billion) compensation plan with lignite-fired power plant operators, a key step to its plan to halt the use of lignite and hard coal generation by 2038. The draft law is expected to be approved by the cabinet by the end of this month and voted on by Parliament this summer.
