The German government has amended its draft plan to phase out coal by 2038 to give coal-fired power plant operators an extra year to take part in coal phase-out remuneration auctions. If passed, the amendments will also increase the compensation available to operators that close coal-fired power plants and extend the deadline for forced non-compensated closures of coal- fired power plants from 2027 until 2031. The changes were welcomed by German utilities, but the gas industry said a capacity mechanism will still be needed to guarantee future security of supply.
