London—The risk of the UK dropping out of the EU carbon market this year increased with Boris Johnson becoming Prime Minister, with carbon prices appearing to factor in that risk in August, according to S&P Global Platts Analytics. The binary nature of the Brexit outcome could therefore leave carbon prices exposed to upside if the UK and EU manage to find a last minute withdrawal deal, keeping the UK in the EU Emissions Trading System until 2020.
