China to add 5.4 mil mt of alumina refining capacity in 2019, mostly in second quarter: SDIC

China is expected to add a total of 5.4 million mt of alumina output capacity in 2019, most of which is expected to be commissioned in the second quarter, State Development and Investment Corp. said in its 2019 aluminum sector report Monday. SDIC estimated the new capacity would raise national alumina output by 3.7 million mt a year this year. It said China’s current capacity was 75 million mt/year, adding that domestic alumina supply was expected to be 78.7 million mt by the end of 2019, due to the extra capacity.
