Examining the feasibility and market impact of increased alumina refining capacity in Guinea

For the past ten years the Government of Guinea has been attempting to answer a rather simple question with respect to the development of new refining capacity -Why not Guinea? Given all of the development of new alumina refining capacity that is occurring worldwide - why has this development effort appeared to bypass Guinea? We tried to answer that question - are there specific competitive disadvantages to development in Guinea, is it the result of a misperception with respect to the country, or is there some additional impediment? For the major aluminum players active in Guinea for the past thirty years (Alcoa, Alcan, Pechiney, Rusal, et al), those who have kept Guinea such a well-kept secret, a list of the country's strengths will come as no surprise. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to visit Guinea let me take you on a brief visual tour of some of the country's strengths.
