Iraqi PM Tries to Defuse Kirkuk Oil Crisis

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi met with the president of the semiautonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Tuesday to discuss mounting tensions in Kirkuk province, where gunmen have commandeered oil installations, raided a federal oil firm’s headquarters and threatened to cut off crude exports. Kirkuk is in the north of federal Iraq but controlled by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) party, a rival to KRG President Masoud Barzani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
