Biden Lease Ban Threatens Alaska Upstream

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s proposed restrictions on federal oil and natural gas activity could take an outsized toll on oil production in the state of Alaska, where prospects in federal areas are being eyed to replace declining output on the North Slope. Biden, if elected, has vowed to ban new oil and gas leasing and permitting in federal lands and waters. He could add exemptions, but so far hasn’t indicated that Alaska would be excluded from his policy. If President Donald Trump is re-elected, by contrast, the state could see the first oil and gas lease sale in a portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).
