Democracy, I fear, is not a natural form of the human condition. Yes we pay lip service to wanting to have a say in how the country is run, but in reality we just want to know that someone half competent is in charge and if they prove less so or a bit light-fingered we can give them the shove. Democracy is what we call the little episodes we go through every couple of years, where we vote for our local representative, who then toddles off to Westminster to sit quietly on the back benches fiddling his expenses.
