LAST SUMMER WE set out to put the 'affordable' back into our Britain's Best Affordable Driver's Car shootout: not one of the eight performance machines assembled had a list price in excess of ￡30,000. And what a field it was. Among contenders from names more commonly associated with the pocket-rocket genre - think Renault Sport, Ford Performance, Volkswagen GTI - were a number of young upstarts determined to give the established order a bloody nose. Toyota's rabidly excellent supercharged Yaris GRMN springs to mind here, as do the Hyundai i30 N and BBR-tuned Mazda MX-5.
