Swedish iron ore miner LKAB this week decided not to take its Mertainen mine into production, because itwill be an unprofitable operation.Open-pit Mertainen is one of three in the Svappavaara field planned to increase the company's deliverycapacity. The decision to develop the deposits was taken in 2010, a time of high prices for coarse iron orefines, a product to which Mertainen is well suited, LKAB said.
