S. alba, traditionally grown for condiment mustard, has been proposed as a potential oilseed crop, although at present it is characterized by low oil content and low oil quality. Crosses were carried out to investigate the inheritance of low erucicacid content and low glucosinolate content in S. alba, and to determine the feasibility of using S. alba to improve canola cultivars. Segregation analyses indicated that total glucosinolate content in seed meal is controlled by the maternal plant genotype. Inheritance of glucosinolates is controlled in a simple Mendelian manner, high glucosinolate content being dominant to low glucosinolate content. Reduction in erucic acid was associated with increased proportions of all other important fatty acids, and particularly oleic acid. However, no correlation was found between erucic acid and glucosinolate contents.
