Ultrastructural changes during cryopreservation of rice embryogenic suspension cells by vitrification were assessed using transmission electron microscopy. Preculture reduced the volume of vacuoles and eliminated the osmotic sensitive organelles. Swelling of mitochondria and dropping in their matrix density were observed in loaded cells. After the dehydration process, nucleus cisternal space expanded and two kinds of membranous vesicles formed. No significant morphological changes occurred subsequently in the freezing step. During recovery culture, all the structural alterations were restored. The possible mechanisms for the results mentioned above were also discussed. [References: 16]
