LOTS of good things have been invented or discovered by Scots: the telephone, television, golf, whisky and, possibly more relevant to our readers, chloroform and penicillin. Now we can add the Scottish Patient Safety Programme, which has just been extended to primary care (p322). Described as a world-leading initiative by Health Improvement Scotland, which has developed it in association with Health Education Scotland, this is believed to be the first patient safety programme in the world to be launched across an entire healthcare system. Schemes are now running in GP surgeries, in hospitals, and in mental health and maternity services. Interest has been expressed in the programme by Denmark, Sweden, the US, Canada and South Africa.
