I write in response to the letter "Tantamount to robbery" (PJ, 28 May 2011, p619) by Iain Rooney. The direct-to-pharmacy distribution arrangements were initially made possible in 2009 by the Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme. The Department of Health restricts the return on capital employed and other capital returns on in-patent medicines by use of the PPRS.The aUowance of DTP was successfully granted to manufacturers on several grounds, including safeguarding against counterfeit medicines entering the supply chain.
