Use of acid suppressants linked to hospital-acquired pneumonia, US study suggests

Acid suppressants are associated with an increased risk of hospital-acquired pneumonia, a US study suggests (JAMA 2009;301:2120). Using admission data collected from electronic medical information databases, the researchers found that just over half (52 per cent; 32,922) of all patients admitted to an academic medical centre in Boston from January 2004 until December 2007 were prescribed a proton-pump inhibitor or a H2 receptor antagonist.
