Vaccine production capacity limiting factor in influenza pandemic

Capacity within the manufacturing industry will be the limiting factor when it comes to vaccine production in the event of an influenza pandemic,according to David Salisbury,director of immunisation policy at the Department of Health.Dr Salisbury,speaking at a seminar in London last week,said:"Production of a vaccine takes roughly four months to get vaccine coming out of the factory door." According to Dr Salisbury,it took researchers last year some 84 days from obtaining the H5N1 virus to convert it to a form that could be given to industry so they could begin working on a vaccine.
