For many years there has been much hyperbole about stem-cell research, but recent developments have brought its enormous potential a little closer. For example, possible treatment for multiple sclerosis and potential implications for other neurodegenerative diseases have been explored in the recent Lancet Series on stem cells. However, the involvement of human embryonic stem cells and how these cells might be applied in medicine have raised many ethical and legal questions. To inform this debate and ensure that the momentum driving these developments is not lost the European Science Foundation has published a report, Human Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine, comparing the legislation within Europe that governs this field and highlighting some European successes.
