Research Focus Profile: SATVI-a leading light in tuberculosis vaccine research

It's a wrap for the much anticipated tuberculosis vaccine candidate trial in HIV-negative infants. Research workers cradle armloads of files, checking and dispatching them to boxes lining the room at a South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (SATVI) site office in Worcester, about 110 km outside Cape Town. The numbered files referto each of the almost 2800 babies who were part of testing the efficacy of the new MVA85A vaccine, the first since Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) was developed 90 years ago.
