Since the publication of Samuel Smiles's Self-Help in 1859, improving books have undergone massive inflation in terms of both their popularity and their claimed benefits. Airport bookshops seem to be particularly enthusiastic stockists. Maybe these titles attract the business traveller, or there is something about the process of transit that makes them appealing. One suspects that to be a fan of self-help books is largely a process of travelling hopefully rather than arriving at any tangible benefits.
