Exenatide in type 2 diabetes.

Michaela Diamant and colleagues (June 26, p 2234) compared exena-tide's efficacy profile with that of insulin glargine as an adjunctive antidiabetic agent for patients with type 2 diabetes and suboptimal glycaemic control despite maximum doses of oral blood-glucose-lowering drugs. Not only did treatment improve glycaemic control, it induced weight loss and improvement of metabolic variables without increasing the frequency of hypoglycaemic events, which have been suggested to contribute to a heightened risk of mortality in patients under strict glucose control.
