People who are obese are at increased risk of serious diseases, including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. In the USA, an estimated 16.9% of children and adolescents aged between 2 and 19 years were obese and 31.7% overweight, according to the 2007-08 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The Yale Rudd Centre for Food Policy and Obesity has recently released a comprehensive report on fast food nutrition and youth marketing. Fast Food f.a.c.t.s (food advertising to children and teens score)2 analysed 12 fast food restaurants and their menu compositions, external advertising, and in-store marketing. The findings are alarming-only 12 out of 3039 possible meal combinations met pre-specified nutrition criteria for pre-schoolers, and at least 30% of calories from menu items came from sugar and saturated fat.
