By any measure, the USA has shown remarkable commitment to global health during the past few years. But this commendable record makes the US Global AIDS Coordinator Mark Dybul's dismissive response to offers of cooperation from some of the leading experts in neglected-disease research and treatment all the more surprising. What the neglected-disease community proposed, at a conference in Washington last week, was a synergistic approach to disease control, combining the elimination of a host of parasitic diseases with treatment for HIV, for the benefit of communities at risk of both. Dybul's response was unequivocal. Integration? "Not with my money".
