Cancer cells require large amounts of amino acids to survive and L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1) transports essential amino acids. Xu et al (page 1588) from Japan examined the association between androgen receptor (AR) and LAT1, and between LAT1 expression and castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).1 They used Western blotting and real-time polymerase chain reaction to study protein and mRNA expression with siRNA used to knockdown target genes. Immunohistochemical analyses were performed on prostate biopsy specimens from patients who underwent androgen deprivation therapy.
