Editorial Comment: These reports, generated by a leading group of physiologists who study the gastrointestinal transport of oxalate and other anions, provide more insight into the processes impacting the delivery of oxalate to the kidney. Their findings suggest that the net gastrointestinal absorption of oxalate is impacted by the amount of oxalate absorbed and secreted. They demonstrated that the secretory anion exchanger, Slc26A6, may be inhibited by cholinergic activity, which, in turn, would inhibit the transcellular flux of oxalate into the intestinal lumen. Their results also suggest that the majority of oxalate absorption in the mouse is via a paracellular transport, which may be influenced by tight junctional proteins.
