India’s Supreme Court Monday declared allcoal blocks allocated by the central government between1993 and 2010 illegal and said it would decide whether to cancel the allocations or penalize the recipients onSeptember 1.In a 164-page judgement, the Supreme Court deemed theallocation of 194 coal blocks to both government and privatecompanies by the central government in the period“arbitrary and illegal.”
