BNSF chief calls for safer tank cars

Bismarck—Gases and vapors in crude oil that potentially make transport unsafe are a growing industry safety issue that must be resolved, Matt Rose, executive chairman of big rail carrier BNSF said Wednesday. As industry understands more about the levels of gases and vapors in light grades of crude oil produced in unconventional shale plays—and in particular the Bakken Shale— either gases must be reduced to an acceptable level to allow them to be transported in existing tank cars, or the tank cars must be appropriate for the oil, Rose said during a presentation to the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference.
