Bogota—Spurred by laws mandating reduc- tions in both pollution and oil dependency, Colombia’s production of ethanol in 2011 rose to at least 336 million liters, or nearly 20% more than the 280 million liters pro- duced the year before, the country’s largest biofuels manufacturers association said January 26. Jorge Bendeck Olivella, president of the National Biofuels Federation, said installed capacity grew to 1.25 million l/d last year, up from about 1.05 million l/d the year before, due to expansion of the country’s five main ethanol facilities located in the Cauca Valley sugar-growing region.
