Rio Tinto Alcan has signed a one-year agreement with Hydro-Quebec to supply the company with an additional 230MW of energy. Under the agreement, Hydro-Quebec will provide a block of 230MW of energy for a period of 12 months at the regulated "L" rate. Low rainfall in Quebec has led to drought conditions, causing low water levels in reservoirs which have affected Rio Tinto Alcan's own hydropower generation. The additional energy will ensure that Rio Tinto Alcan can maintain operations at all its plants in Quebec until the drought situation improves.
