Academia Opposes Construction Of New PC Facilities in Taiwan

Taipei—Taiwan's central research academy, Academia Sinica, plans to submit to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) a proposal that construction of future petrochemical plants in the country be prohibited.The proposal, which specifically cites Kuokuang Petrochemical Technology Co.'s planned petrochemical complex in Tacheng, notes that scientific data has demonstrated that Formosa Plastic's No. 6 naphtha cracker in Mailiao has created health threats to local residents. Banning future projects would also help the country reach its carbon reduction target under the Kyoto Protocol.
