Industry Opposes Crude-by-Rail Brake Proposal

New braking requirements for train cars carrying crude over the US rail network will hamper reliability and speed, according to Matt Rose, executive chairman of railway BNSF (OD May4'15). The new braking requirements -- so-called electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) brakes -- are thought to more evenly control braking among train cars, thus reducing the chance of accidents. But Rose said they would also slow down rail traffic for other customers.
